July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence! We are commemorating this historic year by looking at how our work has helped make government work better for the American people. Check this page to see our updates throughout 2026.
For over a century, we have been a trusted advisor to Congress, a proud defender of the public interest, and a leading expert on improving government. Commonly known as the “congressional watchdog,” we examine how the federal government operates and spends its money—pointing out where it is doing well and where it can improve. Since 2002, GAO’s work has resulted in about $1.51 trillion in financial benefits for Congress and the American people.
From our early days of reviewing paper receipts for federal expenses to our current, cutting-edge work on the use of artificial intelligence, we ensure that government programs remain accountable to the taxpayers. We also ask the questions that the public needs to know to ensure the health of the nation.
For example:
How does the government ensure that public money is used wisely?
How do we know the government is working properly?
How can the government adapt to changes in science and technology?
How can the government responsibly manage the national debt?
Congress asks us to examine some of the most consequential, costly, and complex issues of today—such as cybersecurity, fraud in federal programs, national security, and Medicare and Medicaid. Over the years, our recommendations have saved trillions of taxpayer dollars, changed laws, improved public health and safety, and enhanced federal management.
