Highlights

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided preliminary information from its review of federal personnel security clearances. GAO noted that: (1) for fiscal year 1993, executive branch agencies, excluding the Central Intelligence Agency, spent about $325 million on security clearance investigations; (2) contractors received about $20 million for investigations they performed; and (3) about 2.3 million executive branch employees and about 853,000 contractor employees have security clearances.
