Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the: (1) amounts and sources of education funding for land-grant colleges; and (2) major programs that provide such funding. GAO noted that: (1) 98 of the 107 land-grant schools received total revenues of $27 billion for the 1992 to 1993 school year, of which $4.57 billion was from federal sources; (2) the major programs that provide funding to land-grant schools include the agricultural experiment station program and extension services program; (3) tribal schools received more federal funding per full-time-equivalent (FTE) student than historically black land-grant schools for the 1992 to 1993 school year; (4) most of the tribal schools received federal funds from two Bureau of Indian Affairs' programs; (5) the Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided about 29 percent of total federal revenue to historically black land-grant schools and about 18 percent to 1862 land-grant schools; and (6) for fiscal year 1996, USDA has requested $4.6 million for tribal land-grant schools, $80 million for 1890 schools, and $562.3 million for 1862 schools.
