Pursuant to the District of Columbia Retirement Reform Act, GAO reviewed an actuarial firm's report on the disability retirement rate of District police officers and fire fighters to determine the 1988 disability retirement rate for District police officers and fire fighters hired before February 15, 1980.
GAO found that the actuary reported a disability retirement rate of 0.733 percent so no reduction was required in the fiscal year 1990 payment to the District's Police and Fire Fighters Retirement Fund. The actuary found that : (1) 28 members retired on disability in 1988; and (2) on January 1, 1988, there were 3,822 police officers and fire fighters on active duty who were hired before February 15, 1980. GAO found that the actuarial report met the act's requirements.
