GAO was asked to determine the proper allocation of travel expenses where an employee scheduled annual leave and personal travel and was then assigned to temporary duty in another location for the period immediately following her leave. While the employee was on leave, she was notified that the temporary duty was canceled, and she incurred additional expense in returning to her home. GAO held that the employee should only reimburse the Government for the original cost of her travel since, but for the temporary duty assignment, she would not have incurred the additional expense.
