In response to a congressional request, GAO commented on whether any of the documents and materials recently obtained from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) contained evidence of violations of the Legal Services Corporation Act of 1974. GAO noted that a limited review of LSC activities indicated that violations of statutory prohibitions had taken place. Although appropriated funds were illegally expended by fund recipients, GAO does not believe that the Government will be able to recover the funds. GAO recommended that LSC take appropriate action to amend its regulations governing the activities of fund recipients and LSC officials in order to prohibit such expenditures in the future.
