Eligibility for Survivor Benefit Coverage

A question was raised as to whether a retired military member was properly allowed survivor benefit plan coverage for his spouse since he married subsequent to the period for election and during the election period had a dependent child for whom he did not elect coverage. The retiree was entitled to elect coverage for his wife even though he did not elect coverage for his dependent child during the allowable period. None of the amounts deducted from his retired pay for coverage is required to be refunded.
