Ridesharing and Taxi Safety

Many people rely on ridesharing and taxi services, but there's growing concern about driver and passenger safety. Although there is no federal requirement to collect data specifically on assaults against drivers and passengers of ridesharing vehicles and taxis, six federal databases contain some information on such assaults. One database reported 19 fatal assaults of ridesharing and taxi drivers in 2019. Data from 3 ridesharing companies that collect and voluntarily issue reports on fatal and sexual assaults show about 4,600 serious sexual assaults occurred in 2019. While some information is available, it doesn't fully describe the extent of assaults in these industries due to issues such as incomplete data.
