Melissa Emrey-Arras discusses our January 2023 report on the enforcement procedures regarding misrepresentation by colleges. Substantial misrepresentation occurs when a college makes certain false or misleading statements-or omissions-about its programs, costs, or graduate employment. GAO recommends the Department of Education complete and update both investigative and penalty procedures to better protect students.
