Highlights

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Department of Energy's (DOE) inventory of firearms, ammunition, and military equipment at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site, focusing on whether any of the equipment has been written off as an unrecoverable loss. GAO noted that: (1) the number of firearms, ammunition, and night-vision devices at the site correctly match DOE property records; (2) firearms are properly stored at the facility's armory, or appropriate guard stations; (3) ammunition is placed in short or long-term storage, so that the quantity and type of ammunition can be reconciled to inventory records; (4) DOE night-vision devices are stored in locked safes that can only be accessed by two contractor employees; (5) each piece of equipment contains a serial number that corresponds to inventory records; and (6) there has been one write-off of military equipment, since the contractor assumed control of Rocky Flats' inventory.
