Highlights

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the lands that the Army Corps of Engineers manages for active civil works projects, focusing on the: (1) number of acres managed; and (2) purposes for which these lands are being managed. GAO noted that: (1) as of March 1996, the Corps managed over 12.4 million acres in association with active civil works projects; (2) most of the acreage was being managed for flood control, navigation, or the combined purposes of flood control, hydropower, and recreation, or flood control and hydropower; and (3) there were minor inconsistencies in the data provided, since there was one project that was not included in the Corps' inventory and some projects that were started, but not completed.
