Highlights

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the use of copyrighted personal computer software at the Department of Justice, focusing on: (1) Justice's policies and procedures for ensuring the proper use of copyrighted software; and (2) the extent to which unauthorized software exists at Justice agencies. GAO noted that: (1) departmentwide policies and procedures regarding software management are contained in computer security guidance and focus on virus protection; (2) most component-level policies and procedures did not address the issue of software licenses and copyright protection; and (3) the extent of unauthorized software use at Justice could not be determined.
