The Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. (NFS) plant at West Valley, NY, the only commercial nuclear reprocessing facility operated in the United States, was closed in 1972 for modifications aimed at limiting effluent releases, reducing personnel exposures to radiation, and increasing plant capacity.
