Progress Under the Joint Program to Improve Accounting in the Federal Government

The staffs of the Bureau of the Budget, Treasury Department, and General Accounting Office developed a progress report under the joint accounting improvement program. This report is intended to provide an illustrative summary of the kind of progress being made throughout the Government by the various individual agencies as well as the central agencies toward achievement of the objectives of the Budget and Accounting Procedures Act of 1950. Part I is a general summary indicating and illustrating the general pattern of accounting improvement taking place. Part II includes an illustrative summary intended to provide a general idea of the kind of accomplishments being made by various individual agencies, as a result of the exercise of their own initiative and constructive efforts, in shaping their accounting to better meet management needs as well as coordinating it with the broader objectives of the joint program.
