Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing Service: National Organic Program (NOP); Organic Livestock and Poultry Standards

Highlights

GAO reviewed the Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Marketing Service's (AMS) new rule entitled "National Organic Program (NOP); Organic Livestock and Poultry Standards." GAO found that the final rule amends organic livestock and poultry production requirements by adding new provisions for livestock handling and transport, slaughter, and avian (poultry) living conditions, as well as by expanding and clarifying existing requirements covering livestock care and production practices and non-avian living conditions.

Enclosed is our assessment of AMS's compliance with the procedural steps required by section 801(a)(1)(B)(i) through (iv) of title 5 with respect to the rule. If you have any questions about this report or wish to contact GAO officials responsible for the evaluation work relating to the subject matter of the rule, please contact Shari Brewster, Assistant General Counsel, at (202) 512-6398.
