[HUD Employee's Claim for Value of Ticket Obtained Through Frequent Flyer Program]

Highlights

A Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) official requested a decision concerning a HUD employee's claim for the value of an airline ticket obtained through frequent flyer mileage credits from his personal travel. GAO held that the employee: (1) was not entitled to reimbursement for the value of his airline ticket, since he made a stopover for official duty while returning from his annual leave to his permanent duty station; (2) was responsible for returning from annual leave at his own expense; and (3) did not incur any additional transportation expenses incident to his temporary duty assignment. Accordingly, the claim was denied.
