Questions were raised concerning overtime compensation for employees in a travel status. GAO found that: (1) for payment of overtime for time spent in a travel status, the hours worked must be officially ordered or approved, and must meet one of the four required conditions; (2) whether an employee's travel is performed under arduous conditions must be determined on the facts of each individual case; and (3) the circumstances under which an employee would be entitled to compensation for Fair Labor Standards Act overtime for hours during which he was not working were very limited.
