Investment of Grant Funds Provided to the National Railroad Passenger Corporation

An opinion was requested with regard to the investment of Federal grant funds and the disposition of interest earned on the investments by the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak). Grant funds paid to Amtrak may be used to meet current operating expenses while funds from other sources are temporarily invested, or they may be invested when not otherwise currently needed. Amtrak may retain and use for authorized corporate purposes interest earned on such investments.
