IS ACKNOWLEDGED. OUR REVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT WAS INITIATED AS A RESULT OF OUR WORK IN THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION AND IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA GOVERNMENT WHEN IT APPEARED STRONGLY TO US THAT THE ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT WERE DUPLICATIVE OF SIMILAR ACTIVITIES OF THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION WASHINGTON REGIONAL OFFICE. AT THIS TIME WE HAVE NOT MADE A REPORT TO ANYONE ON THIS REVIEW. OUR REVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT WAS NOT REQUESTED BY CONGRESSMAN OLIN TEAGUE OF TEXAS AND AT THE TIME WE UNDERTOOK THE REVIEW WE WERE NOT AWARE OF ANY INTEREST THAT HE MAY HAVE HAD IN THE MATTER.

YOUR LETTER DATED DECEMBER 12, 1962, ON OUR REVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS' AFFAIRS, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, IS ACKNOWLEDGED.

OUR REVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT WAS INITIATED AS A RESULT OF OUR WORK IN THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION AND IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA GOVERNMENT WHEN IT APPEARED STRONGLY TO US THAT THE ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT WERE DUPLICATIVE OF SIMILAR ACTIVITIES OF THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION WASHINGTON REGIONAL OFFICE. FOLLOWING THE REVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT, OUR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR IN CHARGE OF THESE AUDITS ISSUED A LETTER OF INQUIRY TO ENGINEER COMMISSIONER BRIG. GENERAL FREDERICK J. CLARKE REQUESTING COMMENTS ON THE TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS REACHED IN THE REVIEW. AT THIS TIME WE HAVE NOT MADE A REPORT TO ANYONE ON THIS REVIEW.
