Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the Department of Energy's (DOE) fiscal year (FY) 1994 financial and workforce data. GAO noted that: (1) the data could be used as a baseline for measuring changes to DOE; (2) in FY 1994, DOE spent about $20 billion and had about 20,000 federal employees and over 130,000 contractor employees; (3) power marketing administrations and the Federal Energy Regulatory Administration account for over a third of the DOE workforce; (4) most of DOE obligations are for contractual services; and (5) defense and environmental programs account for over half of DOE spending.
