Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on Detroit's plans to request airport grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program. GAO noted that: (1) Detroit has requested $16 million to remove certain houses and commercial structures on the periphery of the Detroit City Airport, and $112 million to help expand the airport and construct a new runway; and (2) Detroit plans to submit its grant application in 1993, after it completes an environmental impact statement.
