Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on: Department of Defense (DOD) military and civilian employment; (2) the number of defense-related jobs in the private sector; (3) the number of DOD contractors; (4) the impediments to identifying job impacts associated with changes in spending at the third and fourth subcontractor tiers; and (5) trends in DOD budget authority and outlays.
