Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO examined the adequacy of coordination between the Departments of Labor and Justice regarding criminal activities involving labor unions and pension benefit funds.

GAO found that opportunities existed for Labor to more promptly coordinate with Justice in its investigations. While Labor established new procedures that GAO believes will reduce the time it takes to complete investigations, the new procedures were not implemented in time for GAO to evaluate their effectiveness. GAO found that Justice attorneys generally believed that Labor has been fully supportive of Justice efforts to combat organized crime and that Labor investigations have been prompt and effective.
