GAO reviewed the various aspects of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Gang, Reporting, Evaluation, and Tracking (GREAT) system including its records, controls, and safeguards. GAO found that: (1) requests from law enforcement agencies for gang member information that were not a part of the system frequently were not being recorded by officers responding to such requests; and (2) due to a lack of funding, GREAT has never been audited, although independent audits would ensure that system controls and safeguards are in place and functioning as intended.
