In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed all travel by the Administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and his staff members which began or ended between December 1, 1982, and May 31, 1983, to determine whether the travel was reasonable and appropriate.

GAO determined that all of the travel during the review period was reasonable and appropriate. The trips taken were not excessively long, frequent, or expensive. They were made by air economy class, and all were taken to obtain information or to attend functions related to juvenile justice activities. During the time period, six individuals began or ended 40 trips and the individuals were reimbursed for the proper per diem or subsistence costs allowed for the locations visited. GAO found a small number of questionable payments, all of a low dollar value, which resulted from arithmetic errors or insufficient documentation. These payments were reported and corrective action has been taken.
