Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO estimated the effects of Japanese-affiliated automakers' automobile production on U.S. employment in 1988. GAO noted that, based on the assumption that 75 percent of the Japanese affiliates' production displaced other U.S.-produced automobiles, net job losses in 1988 totalled about 25,000.
