Highlights

GAO responded to a request for a decision concerning whether a retired Air Force officer could receive retired pay and still maintain an active status as a reserve officer. GAO held that: (1) reserve members who reach age 60 and have sufficient creditable service may apply for and receive retired pay; and (2) once a member qualifies for and receives retired pay, the member may not maintain an active duty status and continue to receive credit for service performed subsequent to receiving retired pay. Accordingly, the member may not maintain an active status as a reserve officer and simultaneously receive retired pay.
