Request for Waiver of Debt

A retired Air Force member requested reconsideration of the Claims Group's denial of his application for waiver of his debt to the United States. The debt arose from erroneous payment of pay and allowances made to him incident to his service in the Air Force. GAO granted a waiver for erroneous payments made on discharge and thereafter since the information the member received from personnel officials indicated that his pay was correct. However, the member was not without fault in accepting an improper allotment payment to his credit union account after discharge since he should have known that he would be required to return the excess sums. Accordingly, the denial of the waiver of an erroneous payment to his credit union account was sustained.
