This document is a response to an informal inquiry concerning statutory mandates for assessments by the Office of Tecnology Assessment (OTA). It discusses different functions of the OTA including providing early indications of the probable beneficial and adverse impacts of the applications of technology, evaluating the effectiveness of legislation, and cost benefit analysis.
