SMITH: REFERENCE IS MADE TO YOUR LETTER DATED JANUARY 21. MAKING A CLAIM FOR $499.90 WHICH YOU SAY WAS WITHHELD FROM YOUR PAY INCIDENT TO YOUR SERVICE AS AN ENLISTED MEMBER OF THE REGULAR ARMY. THE RECORD SHOWS THAT THE AMOUNT WITHHELD FROM YOUR PAY WAS $492.90 AND NOT $499.90. WE EXPLAINED THAT WHILE YOU WERE IN THE MILITARY SERVICE YOU WERE ERRONEOUSLY CREDITED WITH BASIC ALLOWANCE FOR QUARTERS IN THE AMOUNT OF $1. 876.64 AND THAT THE AMOUNT OF $492.90 WHICH WAS OTHERWISE DUE YOU HAD BEEN APPLIED TO REDUCE THIS DEBT SO THAT YOU NOW OWE THE UNITED STATES $1. WE EXPLAINED THAT NOTHING IS DUE YOU FROM THE UNITED STATES AND REQUESTED THAT YOU START MAKING PAYMENTS ON YOUR INDEBTEDNESS WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY.
