Central and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Republics: A Context for Developing GAO Work

GAO developed a context for its work on Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics, focusing on: (1) identifying U.S. objectives and organizational capabilities; (2) enhancing U.S., regional, and global security; (3) encouraging the development of democratic institutions and new international partnership; (4) assisting in the transition to market economics; and (5) assessing the cost of U.S. assistance.
