This publication describes the use of case study evaluations for GAO audit and evaluation work, focusing on: (1) the definition of a case study; (2) the conditions under which a case study is an appropriate evaluation method for GAO work; and (3) the method of distinguishing a good case study from a poor one. It also includes information on: (1) the illustrative, exploratory, critical instance, program implementation, program effects, and cumulative applications of a case study; and (2) case study design and strength assessment.
