Highlights

The Department of Labor requested a decision concerning an employee's claim for reimbursement for his wife's transportation of his privately owned vehicle incident to his transfer. GAO held that: (1) the employee was not entitled to reimbursement for mileage and per diem expenses for his wife's travel since she was not officially relocating or authorized to travel at the government's expense; (2) the employee was the only individual authorized to use the automobile for permanent change-of-station travel; and (3) there was no statute specifically authorizing the transportation of a privately owned vehicle within the continental United States at the government's expense. Accordingly, the claim was denied.
