[Decision on Former Marshals Service Employee's Appeal of Claims Group's Disallowance of Claim for Subsistence Expenses]
Highlights
An employee of the U.S. Marshals Service appealed the Claims Group's denial of his claim for temporary quarters subsistence expenses he incurred during his transfer. GAO noted that the claimant took temporary lodging while on leave for an injury until the Service directed him to report to his new duty station. GAO held that: (1) the expenses claimed were for permanent rather than temporary quarters for the claimant and his family and were not incurred incident to establishing a residence at the new duty station; (2) the claimant inaccurately itemized claimed meal costs; and (3) the claimant presented no receipts showing his payment of laundry and lodging costs in the amounts claimed. Accordingly, the claim was denied.
