Highlights

This article, which appeared in the GAO Review, Vol. 19, Issue 2, Spring 1984, discusses a growing trend in organizations toward permanent part-time work or job sharing. The article describes the kinds of workers involved, provides statistics indicating that their numbers are growing, and states that service industries and government have led the way. GAO is currently conducting a survey to determine what jobs could be effectively performed by permanent part-time employees and will match results of the survey with interested employees. Specific examples from private industry and State Government are given to show how permanent part-time employment and job sharing function in the workplace.
