This article, which appeared in the GAO Review, Vol. 19, Issue 1, Winter 1984, offers a perspective on GAO audit work concerning the effectiveness of enforcing import laws and the Federal efforts to speed the entry of international travelers and imports into this country. In addition, it describes what the Government is doing to correctly classify certain imports and to ensure that customs duties are collected.
