The significant internal events, directions, and changes that occurred in GAO between 1966 and 1981 are summarized. The purpose of the project was to bring together the developments affecting the role and operations of GAO during this period. The history records the ways in which GAO has served Congress and helped to make the government more effective and accountable. Aspects covered include governmentwide program evaluations, government financial management, governmental auditing and intergovernmental audit cooperation, the expansion of jurisdiction and cooperation with other agencies, agency management, the legislative charter, reorganization, program planning, improvement efforts, personnel management, changes in the regional offices, legal decisions and services, and management services.
