Press Release GAO Again Named One of the "Best Places to Work" in Government

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 1, 2010) — Gene L. Dodaro, Acting Comptroller General of the United States and head of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), today welcomed the announcement that GAO has again been rated number two among the best places to work in the federal government.

“The year’s rankings support GAO’s long-standing reputation as one of the premier employers in the federal government. We have outstanding employees and it is gratifying that they gave the agency high marks in such areas as teamwork, investing in our workforce, and supporting family friendly policies. I am proud that so many GAO staff hold the agency and its mission to serve the Congress and help improve government in such high regard,” Dodaro said.

Issued every year, the rankings were released today by the Partnership for Public Service. As it did in 2009, GAO placed second among large federal agencies.

The rankings are based on survey responses from employees at federal agencies and subcomponents. GAO’s composite score of 81.6 is a 6.6-percent increase over its score from last year and reflects rising employee satisfaction. Surveys included questions on how satisfied an employee is with their job, how satisfied the employee is with the organization, and whether the employee would recommend the organization as a good place to work. Other factors include agency efforts to build a cooperative, productive labor-management relationship and foster diversity and an inclusive work environment.

First issued in 2003, the “Best Places to Work” rankings are intended to inform job seekers about the best opportunities for public service and provide policymakers and federal managers with insight into improving employee engagement and commitment.
