The Sergeant at Arms of the U.S. Senate inquired about the extent to which Senate employees involved in accidents while operating Senate-owned motor vehicles in the course of their employment are protected against liability by the United States. Under enactment of the Federal Tort Claim Act, Senate employees are immune from suit. Settlements in excess of $2,500 should be referred to the Comptroller General for payment in accordance with law.
