Highlights

The activities of GAO are reported for the fiscal year ended September 30, 1981. Highlights of these activities are summarized and include: assistance to Congress; auditing/evaluation; impact of new legislation on GAO operations; legal services and decisions; financial management improvement; settlement of claims; savings and other accomplishments; operating expenses; staffing; and participation of Boards, Councils, and Commissions. Legislative recommendations acted on by Congress during the fiscal year, open legislative recommendations made during the fiscal year, and those from prior years are discussed. Financial savings and other benefits derived from GAO activities are detailed. The appendices contain the audit reports issued during the fiscal year, a summary of personnel assigned to congressional committees during the fiscal year, descriptions of major organizational units of GAO, and legislation enacted during the fiscal year relating to the work of GAO.
