In May 2019, we issued a report examining whether there are racial, ethnic, or gender disparities in the military justice system. Among other things, we found the military services do not collect consistent information on race, ethnicity, and gender making it more difficult to identify disparities.
Each year, we make more than 1,000 recommendations to help improve the federal government. We alert department heads to the recommendations where they can save the most money, address issues on our High Risk List, or significantly improve government operations.
In recent years, some U.S. citizens have claimed they were mistakenly identified as foreign nationals and detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or held by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on immigration charges.
The Coast Guard took steps to protect its staff from COVID-19, including expanding telework. As staff continue using this flexibility, the Coast Guard needs to ensure staff are following telework policies—now, and going forward.
Air marshals work at airports, on airplanes, and in other public spaces where they routinely come in close contact with others. The U.S. Federal Air Marshal Service took steps to protect employees from infection of COVID-19 at work by providing N95 masks and encouraging employees to telework.
The Department of Homeland Security started working on replacing its outdated biometric identity management system (fingerprint matching and facial recognition) in 2016. The new system is 3 years behind schedule due to technical and other challenges.
