A state governor was thanked for his comments on a GAO draft report on the implementation of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act; however, the comments suggested that the act requires audits of only the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management and took issue with several report recommendations. GAO stated that there is no limit in the act regarding GAO audit authority, and GAO has the authority to: (1) audit Department of Energy programs; (2) audit and evaluate programs and activities of the federal government; and (3) investigate all matters related to the use of public money.
