GAO summarized its previous reports and testimonies from January 1, 1979 to May 15, 1986 on nuclear: (1) energy; (2) regulation; (3) environment, health, and safety issues; and (4) waste management and disposal procedures.
GAO noted that: (1) awareness of the environment, health, and safety issues concerning nuclear power in the United States has increased as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in the Soviet Union; (2) the adequacy of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's oversight of domestic commercial nuclear facilities is a major concern; and (3) in previous reports it had recommended methods for improving oversight of Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear facilities. GAO found that, although DOE has made some improvements to correct oversight deficiencies, organizational independence of the oversight function may still be a problem area.
