GAO reviewed data on the number of homeless children age 16 and younger and those housed in alternative settings.

GAO found that: (1) about 68,000 children aged 16 and younger lived in shelters, abandoned buildings, cars, or public places on any given night; (2) nearly 186,000 youths shared housing; (3) the differences in the estimates of homeless children attending school reflected differences in the populations studied; and (4) estimates did not include as many as 208,000 homeless youths that run away each year, or children placed in hotels and motels by government agencies, which represented 42 percent of the 1-night estimate.
