Budgetary Implications of Selected GAO Work
OCG-94-3: Published: Mar 11, 1994. Publicly Released: Mar 11, 1994.
- Full Report:
GAO provided budgetary implications of selected work, focusing on: (1) a framework for deficit reduction; and (2) options available to Congress to reduce spending and increase revenues as a result of the findings and issues developed during GAO audits and evaluations.
GAO found that: (1) a framework to facilitate deficit reduction may consist of reassessing program objectives, redefining program beneficiaries, and improving program efficiency; (2) the framework can be used to effectively evaluate programs and formulate broad-based deficit reduction proposals; (3) 57 options for spending reductions and revenue increases were developed by applying to framework to selected GAO work; and (4) the spending and revenue options presented can be used for deficit reduction or to provide funds to other programs. GAO discussed each spending option with the Congressional Budget Office and each revenue option with the Joint Committee on Taxation to determine budgetary effects.
