Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Army's actions to improve the efficiency of its logistics system, focusing on the Direct Support Standard Supply System (DS-4).
GAO found that: (1) DS-4 was incorrectly calculating authorized stock levels for forward support units, which resulted in the authorized levels being overstated by 10 days, representing a cost of as much as $110 million; (2) the Army did not correct this programming error because it expected to replace DS-4; and (3) upon reconsideration, the Army decided to reprogram DS-4 to correct the error.
