Travel Activities of Former Director of Selective Service System

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed certain aspects of travel activities by the Director of the Selective Service System, who is to be nominated for the position of Administrator of Veterans Affairs.
GAO found that: (1) the Director has traveled extensively since 1982; (2) most of Director's trips related to media events, speaking engagements, or staff training; (3) Selective Service officials noted that the Director must travel extensively to best accomplish the system's mission; (4) the Director spent more than half of his travel time in California; (5) the Director's trips to California were, on the average, longer than his other trips; (6) the Director complied with government travel regulations and made efforts to reduce his travel costs by using available military aircraft, applying airline bonus points, and using available low-cost government facilities; and (7) the Director's travel since 1982 has cost the government about $65,600.
