Potential Dollar Reductions to DOD's FY 1986 Missile and the Lightweight Multipurpose Weapon Procurement Programs
NSIAD-85-138: Published: Sep 9, 1985. Publicly Released: Sep 9, 1985.
- Full Report:
In response to a congressional request, GAO examined the Department of Defense's (DOD) 1986 appropriations requests for selected missiles and for weapons.
GAO found that most of the missile programs were adequately justified, but that the Army's missile appropriations request could be reduced by $286.2 million and the Marine Corps' request could be reduced by $27.7 million. A summary of the proposed reductions for each missile system was included in the report as well as an explanation for each decision to either approve or reduce the requested amount. GAO also found that the Army and the Marine Corps appropriations requests for the Improved Lightweight Multipurpose Weapon should be considered for reduction because of delays in the program and the need to further evaluate the two foreign-made systems before making a production decision.
