Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the occupations in which a representative sample of 5,467 male and female Job Training Partnership Act program participants were trained and subsequently placed.
GAO found that: (1) over 3,800 participants received either occupational on-the-job or classroom training, while the remaining participants received only job search assistance, basic education, or short-term work experience; (2) a greater proportion of men received training and placement in higher-skill occupations; (3) a greater proportion of women received training and placement in moderate-skill positions; (4) women more often received training and placement in clerical and secretarial positions, while men more often received training and placement in custodial, machine operator, or laborer positions; and (5) men tended to receive higher wages at placement, regardless of skill level or type of training.
