In response to a congressional request, GAO assessed the implications of evolving public printing, publishing, and information dissemination technology for the future of the Government Printing Office (GPO) and the federal government's public information functions.

GAO distributed a questionnaire designed to collect information from nonfederal libraries and associations on their experiences and future expectations in obtaining and using federal information. GAO received 46 responses from regional depository libraries; 357 responses from selective depository libraries; 436 from college and university, public, and corporate libraries; 149 from scientific and technical associations; and 173 from general associations.
